So last night I learned how to crochet.
(kind of).

I had a friend give me a quick lesson that lasted no more than an hour. He taught me how to crochet "round things," because in his opinion, that's what crochet is best for. For anything else, he claimed that knitting was faster. This meant that I can crochet: flat circles, spheres, and cylinders. And that's about it.

I needed to learn last night because today I spent hours tabling for Fiber Arts Club (of which I am co-coordinator of) at my school's arts and crafts festival, and I wanted to be doing something fiber-related while tabling to attract interest to the club. Basically, I ended up grabbing some scrap balls of yarn from the club's collection and just aimlessly trying to figure out crochet by crocheting a flat, circular disc, which could become possibly a coaster or something.

Because I'm inexperienced, the disc started to curve at the edges. At this point, someone suggested I make a jellyfish, which seemed like something within my abilities, so I started working on that. I was actually pretty happy with the result:

One of the other co-coordinators was selling knitted dinosaurs at our booth, and a woman stopped by and looked at them. She had a young child and she was buying sea-related toys and things for him.

Of course, she spotted my jellyfish.

And she wanted to buy it. Since it was my first crochet project, I was hesitant. I didn't trust my beginner workmanship, for one thing. I told her that I couldn't sell this one, and she asked if she could give me her email so that I could contact her about making another one for her to buy. I agreed (because why not? I needed a new project).

...And that's the story of how I got commissioned to crochet a jellyfish literally the day after I learned how to crochet.
